Carnival Sets 2020 Sustainability Goals With 25 percent GHG Reduction Target
Carnival Corporation has announced its 2020 sustainability goals, which includes a commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 25 percent compared to its 2005 baseline, the company announced this week.
The company said that it had met its target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 20 percent from 2005 base levels a year early in 2014, and was now reaffirming it goals.
"Across our 10 brands, we host millions of guests a year and visit 725 ports of call around the world, and the health and vitality of the oceans, seas and communities through which we travel is absolutely essential to our business," said CEO Arnold Donald.
"That makes protecting the environment one of our most critical areas of focus as a corporation, and it is why it is important for us to publicly communicate our sustainability goals."
The company said that it would also continue to work to reduce waste aboard ships, increase water use efficiency, and increase its use of wastewater purification systems, along with increasing cold ironing capacity to better utilise shore power.
Carnival has also dedicated considerable resources in recent years to scrubber installations, having invested $400 million to install the technology across its fleet, the company added.
Last year, it was reported that that the company had more than doubled its scrubber installations to total 70 ships.
