The U.S. Coast Guard has published two policy letters giving guidance on using liquefied natural gas (LNG) as a marine fuel, LNG World news reports

The first focuses on safe fuel transfer operations and the training of staff on LNG-fueled vessels, aiming to enhance safety measures to the same level as on traditionally-fueled ships.

It was noted however, that though the recommendations apply to ships equipped to receive LNG for use as fuel, it does not apply to LNG carriers that use boil-off gas as fuel.

A second letter addresses safety, security, and risk assessment measures aboard LNG vessels conducting bunkering operations.

Draft versions of the two letters were released earlier this month, with the Coast Guard now requesting comments on the finalized versions.

It was reported earlier this month that the Society for Gas as a Marine Fuel (SGMF) has released a LNG bunkering safety guide.
