The Panama Canal Authority (ACP) today has highlighted the bunker, emission, and cost savings provided by the Expanded Panama Canal, which recently celebrated its first year of operation.

"The Expanded Canal helps reduce shippers' environmental impacts by offering greater cargo carrying capacity and less cargo movements - in turn reducing costs, fuel consumption and emissions," said Alexis Rodriguez, the Canal's Environmental Protection Specialist who recently spoke to ACP's The Canal Connection.

"From June 2016-2017, more than 1,500 Neopanamax vessels transited the Expanded Canal, which has contributed to a reduction of more than 17 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions."

Rodriguez also highlighted the savings provided by the Canal prior to the expansion, saying that the shorter route afforded by the waterway had resulted in an estimated reduction of 670 million tons of carbon emissions over the course of its 103-year history.
