Dutch ship owner Spliethoff Group (Spliethoff) has ordered exhaust gas cleaning systems for five vessels from Alfa Laval, a repeat order for the company, Alfa Laval said.

The scrubbers are scheduled to be delivered in 2014.

Spliethoff ordered its existing scrubber system in 2012, and it has now operated for more than 7,000 hours in Emissions Control Areas (ECAs).

"This repeat order for our scrubber technology confirms that it is an attractive and proven solution for the reduction of sulphur oxides, be it for retrofits or for installation aboard new vessels," said Lars Renström, president and CEO of the Alfa Laval Group.

Spliethoff operates more than 100 multipurpose, heavy-lift and ro-ro vessels, according to its website.

"Our technical department continuously explores new ways to reduce fuel consumption, because less fuel consumption equals less air emissions," the company says.

That includes the use of waste heat recovery systems, design optimisation, weather routing systems, and the use of low sulfur fuel by some vessels, as well as the scrubbers.
