Singapore bunker company Sinanju Marine Services (SMS) has completed its first ship-to-ship bunkering of an oil tanker which was working cargo at the Sebarok Terminal.

Concurrent bunkering at the Vopak Sebarok Terminal at Singapore is a new departure for Vopak as the practice is not normally allowed at oil terminals on safety grounds. Oil tankers usually move to another anchorage for bunkering.

However, the move is in line with theĀ  Maritime and Port Authority's desire to increase efficiency at the Southeast Asian bunkering hub.

Desmond Chong, SMS general manager, said his company was pleased to participate in this enhanced bunkering service.

"Safety is of utmost importance to us," Chong told Ship & Bunker.

"We carried out lengthy and thorough risk assessments with Vopak Terminals Singapore and other stakeholders before agreeing to this endeavour.

"We are delighted that Vopak entrusts Sinanju's expertise to partner us in concurrent bunkering and offer this practice as an enhanced service offering," Chong said.

The practice may be extended to other Vopak terminals in the port.
