The International Maritime Organization (IMO) Tuesday announced that it will be working with the European Commission (EC) to reduce emissions from the shipping industry.

IMO Secretary-General Kitack Lim is said to have met with European Transport Commissioner Violeta Bulc on Tuesday in Brussels to discuss climate change, passenger ship safety, and the need for quality shipping promotion.

Bulc is said to have confirmed the EC's support for the principle for an international regulatory framework for shipping that is both developed and governed by the IMO.

It is reported that the EC and the IMO will work together this year toward the adoption of a mandatory collection and reporting system for global ship emissions.

In January, the IMO announced that an energy efficiency project that intends to develop a global network of Maritime Technology Cooperation Centres (MTCCs) in developing countries can go ahead after the IMO received €10 million ($10.83 million) in funding support from the EC.
