Shanghai launched its first waste container ship powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG) on January 4, local media reports.

Built by Shanghai SMI Environmental Industry Co., Ltd., the vessel has a 30 TEU capacity.

The vessel will be employed on the Huangpu River, transporting domestic solid waste containers to disposal sites.

The vessel is reported to be the first of 36 such LNG-powered waste container ships to be launched in Shanghai.

Today's news is the latest is a raft of changes in China aimed at reducing emissions from Shipping.

As Ship & Bunker previously reported, last month Changjiang (Yangtze) National Shipping Group Co. Ltd converted a freighter to be dual-fuel LNG capable, and in what was hailed as a first of its kind, an all-electric cargo ship fully powered by a lithium battery recently launched in Guangzhou.

On January 1, 2018, China also passed the latest milestone in the introduction of its emissions control areas (ECAs).
